Referral to Hospital by your GP

Specialist Referrals on the NHS

You are entitled to request a referral for specialist treatment on the NHS. However, your GP will determine whether a referral is clinically necessary based on your individual case.

If you wish to see a specialist in a particular field, such as a Surgeon or Gynaecologist, you should consult the GP with whom you are registered. As your GP has access to your full medical records and understands your health history, they will make an informed decision regarding your referral.

Important Information for Your Referral

When attending your GP appointment, please:

  • Provide details of any dates when you are unavailable.
  • Inform your GP if you require an interpreter at your appointment.
  • Ensure your contact details are up to date.

Referral Process

  1. Your GP will send an electronic referral to the hospital within your catchment area.
  2. The hospital will process the referral.
  3. You should receive an appointment within 18 weeks, unless your referral is marked as urgent, in which case it may be sooner. Please do not contact the practice to check on the referral’s progress before this timeframe.
  4. If you have concerns, you can contact the hospital department directly.
  5. If you still have questions about your referral, you may contact the practice.

You can also call the NHS e-Referral Service on 0345 608 8888 (Monday to Friday, 8am–8pm; weekends and bank holidays, 8am–4pm) for assistance.
